OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE

The Balanced Scorecard

The Balanced Scorecard  translates a company's vision and strategy into a coherent set of performance measures. The four perspectives of the scorecard--financial measures, customer knowledge, internal business processes, and learning and growth--offer a balance between short-term and long-term objectives, between outcomes desired and performance drivers of those outcomes, and between hard objective measures and softer, more subjective measures. In the first part, Kaplan and Norton provide the theoretical foundations for the Balanced Scorecard; in the second part, they describe the steps organizations must take to build their own Scorecards; and, finally, they discuss how the Balanced Scorecard can be used as a driver of change

The 4 Disciplines of Execution

The 4 Disciplines exist for one reason: to execute on a plan in the midst of the whirlwind of distractions. Most people are so busy just maintaining the business—just keeping their heads above water—most of the time they can't even hear you, let alone execute on your most important priorities. The 4 Disciplines focuses your team's energy on a winnable game in the midst of distraction

LEADERSHIP

The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership

“Everything rises and falls on leadership.” The book covers 21 principles that help you to become a more powerful and effective leader, based on Maxwell’s insights from over 40 years of leadership experience, and observations of leaders in business, politics, sports, military etc. There are several important points to note:

  • To lead well, you must do all 21 things well.  Yet, no single person can apply all 21 laws perfectly. Besides constantly improving yourself, the other way is to develop a strong leadership team, so that all 21 laws can be satisfied.
  • All 21 laws can be learned and mastered.
  • Each law stands alone (hence you need not learn them in sequence) but they complement/ reinforce one another.
  • The laws bring consequences. People will follow or not follow you, depending on whether you apply or violate the laws.
  • The laws need to be applied in real life to form the foundation of leadership.

Dare to Serve

Cheryl Bachelder joined an ailing restaurant chain and turned it into the darling of the industry - by daring to serve the people in her organization well. When Bachelder was named CEO of Popeyes in the fall of 2007, guest visits had been declining for years, restaurant sales and profit trends were negative, and the company stock price had dropped from $34 in 2002 to $13. The brand was stagnant, and relations between the company and its franchise owners were strained.

By 2014 average restaurant sales were up 25 percent, and profits were up 40 percent. Popeyes' market share had grown from 14 percent to 21 percent, and the stock price was over $40. The franchisees were so pleased with the turnaround that they began reinvesting in the brand, rapidly remodeling restaurants and building new units around the world. The difference maker, Bachelder says, was a conscious decision to lead in a new way.

She and her team created a workplace where people were treated with respect and dignity yet challenged to perform at the highest level. Silos and self were set aside in favor of collaboration and team play. And the results were measured with rigor and discipline. Servant leadership is sometimes derided as soft or ineffective, but this audiobook shows that it's actually challenging and tough minded - a daring path. Bachelder takes you firsthand through the transformation of Popeyes and shows how a leader at any level can become a Dare-to-Serve leader.
